Chapter 37: Braxton Childers
Braxton Childers is a senior with a great passion: trap shooting, a sport where clay pigeons are released from a trap to be shot at by competitors. Childers shoots trap for the North Scott trap team; here he also shoots skeet and sporting clays. “I love to hunt and shoot,” Childers said when asked what sparked his interest in trap shooting, “so it was a great way to practice hunting and get to shoot more often.”
In his free time he spends a lot of his time outside in the woods, especially during hunting season, from October to mid January. He also enjoys just hanging out with friends and working at Hyvee.
Family is also very important to Childers. “My dad has been one of my best trap coaches besides my main coach Ron Brady,” Childers said. “He is the reason I am where I am today.” He enjoys spending time with his dad and two dogs outside whenever he is presented with the chance to do so.
After high school Childers is planning on going to Hawkeye Community College to study either electromechanical engineering or electronics engineering. He will also continue his shooting career on their collegiate trap team. In the past year the team has earned multiple national titles in their division. They claimed three Division IV titles in skeet, five-stand and bunker trap. They added to the awards with second place in sporting clays, trap and high overalls.
Childers has taken almost every shop class offered at the high school, from woodworking to metalwork. This hands-on work helped him realize that he would like to explore the idea of going into engineering. He has always been curious about how things work mechanically as well which will give him the drive to go into a profession where he will get to continue to learn about and work with the mechanics of everyday objects.
