The Wall of Honor program was established in 1999 to recognize distinguished alumni who have graduated from Pleasant Valley High School. Last week Dr. Douglas Moard was the most recent alumni selected to receive the accolade.
Dr. Moard graduated from PVHS in 1976 and has since spent his life serving the community of Appleton, Wisconsin as a Board Certified Family Physician. After he graduated from high school, Moard received a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Luther College in 1980, and continued his education at The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, graduating in 1984. Dr. Moard then went on to complete his residency at Fox Valley Family Practice Residency in Appleton, Wisconsin from 1984-87, and was Chief Resident from 1988-89.
In 1987 Moard joined Thedacare Physicians and has continued working his way up to the Assistant Medical Director since 2005.
While in high school, Moard was involved in more than just his academics. While keeping stellar grades, he was still able to be involved in many different activities. Moard took part in band, choir, drama, tennis, wrestling and the Letterman’s Club. Even in high school Moard was used to receiving reverence for his accomplishments being selected into the Iowa Allstate Chorus and being awarded the Danforth award.
“I have to say I was a little surprised when I heard back from the selection committee”, Moard said. “I felt good to, to be sure. It gave me reason to return and see the school I had not visited for many years. It was also an opportunity to see some of my teachers I had not seen since graduation.” Teachers who he says he owes so much.
As he reaches retirement age, Moard realizes that he won’t always be around. So he decided that mentoring others is vital. “I do a lot of teaching”, stated Moard. “Much of this involves medical students or nurse practitioner students who rotate through my office. They are the future of medicine so I view it is important work.”
With another school year going by, another outstanding alumni has been recognized. One whom students can look up to and realize that they too can make a difference in their community and in the world.
