Boris Pasternak once said, “Surprise is the greatest gift which life can grant us.”

On September 5th, 2018, a top official from the Trump administration anonymously submitted an article chronicling the efforts of those “unsung heroes” from within the White House that generally side with the Commander in Chief. There are many theories and ideas concerning the author of this article, but no definitive source has been identified.

One of the most prominent theories is that Vice President Mike Pence is the unnamed author of our glimpse into the inner workings of Trump’s administration. The main reason this theory has gained traction is due to the use of a certain word in the article that only Pence has ever said in public. According to the Huffington Post, “The unidentified author singles out the late Arizona Sen. John McCain as “a lodestar for restoring honor to public life and our national dialogue.”

This is important because Pence has publicly used the word lodestar on several occasions, making him a favorite for many as their guess on who the anonymous author is. Katie Bullock, a senior at PV, said, “Being that Pence is Trump’s right hand man, he probably has more of an inside view than most. For Pence to come out and say something against Trump would really shed some light on what our government is looking like under Trump.”

There are many other theories about the inside source as well but some think that the source might not even matter too much in the long run. As much as this anonymous article has reached the attention of the public, it has also hit home with legislators as well. Alton Barber, a senior at PV, explained, “I think that was less for the public eye and more for fellow legislators due to the upcoming Supreme Court nomination and urging them not to completely trust everything that comes from the President’s desk.”

This upcoming Supreme Court nomination is very important as it will be a decision that Trump makes that has a very long lasting effect. Legislators who have read this article will now be dubious of any decisions coming out of the White House and whether everyone in the administration truly believes in the choice that Mr. Trump pushes forward.

The author of this article may never be revealed but the effects that this editorial and this insight into the White House will be felt for a long time to come.
