Spirit is a key factor in creating a successful school environment. According to the Connecticut Association of Schools, “Students with school spirit do more than show support for their school. They perform better academically, are more socially and civically engaged, and are happier in general than their less-spirited peers. What’s more, the majority of principals (92%) feel that high school spirit is tied to high student achievement.”

Senior football player, Michael Meyer, has always been an exemplary leader when it comes to showing school spirit. “School spirit is important because it connects us as a school. You have all your little cliques in school that separate themselves, but when there are opportunities to come together, it is important to take them,” Meyer explained.

When evident, spirit can be extremely contagious. A stadium full of enthusiastic students overcome with pride for their school can drastically affect the performance of sports teams. Speaking for all the PV football players, Meyer said, “Student section spirit makes a difference because it motivates us.”

Younger students should never be afraid to cheer at high school games. Showing some energy in the student section is one of the easiest ways to earn respect from older peers. “It doesn’t matter what grade you’re in. It’s always good to show school spirit,” junior, Kate Mickle, stated.
During Homecoming Week, Spartan Spirit can be found in greater quantities than usual. Each day of the school week features a different theme for students to dress up in. The five outfits serve as morale boosters leading up to the Homecoming football game and the highly-anticipated dance. Thanks to everyone who participated in this year’s themes! Go, Spartans!
