Chapter 60: Abby Roth

From skiing to aspirations in law, there is an endless amount of things to know about senior Abby Roth.

Roth was born in New Jersey, but only lived there for one year. She and her family moved to Utah where they would live for eight years. Roth moved once more, ending up in Iowa, joining the Pleasant Valley School District in fourth grade.

Her family consists of her mother, father, and brother Nick. Nick graduated from PV three years ago and is currently attending the University of Iowa. Other members of the family include her yellow lab Rocky who they had for eleven years, and Cubby the cockapoo who is six years old.

Roth has participated in many activities throughout her life. She started skiing in Utah when she was two years old. During elementary school, she would ski at least once a week and frequently watch live skiing competitions. Her love for skiing traveled with her to Iowa. Roth joined the Snowstar ski team, which she was apart of for three years. With this team, she had the opportunity to travel across the midwest.

Skiing is not the only sport in which Roth has participated. She was on the PV cross country team for three years. Running took the form of both a hobby and a learning opportunity for her. “Cross country taught me to have diligence and patience. I wasn’t the fastest runner, but I accomplished my goals and pushed myself more than I thought I could,” Roth said.

Playing the flute is another one of Roth’s many skills. She started when she was in sixth grade and excelled immediately. She made the Southeast Iowa Bandmasters Association Honor Band in seventh and eighth grade, and last year, she was selected to play in the Augustana College Honor Band. She also played the flute in the Quad City Youth Symphony Orchestra for three years.

Roth is an avid traveler. In addition to traveling around the country with her skiing team, she has been to eight different countries. Her most recent trip abroad was to Spain this past summer on the school immersion trip.

Roth explains why she enjoys traveling. “It’s exciting to go places and see historical landmarks that I’ve only seen on TV and experience it in real life,” Roth said.

Roth will be attending Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. next year and will be majoring in business. She then plans on going to law school.
