Maureen Thomsen, senior clarinet player, has proved to be one of the best musicians the Pleasant Valley band has seen in awhile. Over the weekend of Oct. 22, Maureen and another clarinet player, Ian Aplington, became the second and third four-year All-State band musicians in Pleasant Valley history. The All-State band includes all of the best musicians in the state, who went through a lot of practicing and auditioning to secure a spot to perform in the November All-State Festival Concert. Maureen has a very strong passion for playing, and could not imagine life without the PV band family.
Q: What instrument do you play?
A: Clarinet
Q: How long have you been playing?
A: I have been playing for six years (since sixth grade elementary school band).
Q: Why do you enjoy playing?
A: I enjoy playing for a multitude of reasons. When I first started, I knew I had a passion for playing, even though I was nervous to start. I actually almost did not participate in band, but at this point, I can’t imagine my high school career without band in my life. This has a lot to do with my band directors as well. They create such a kind, positive, family-oriented atmosphere that has impacted my love and passion for music. I look forward to coming to band. It’s my favorite class of the day.
Q: What is your favorite type of music to play?
A: I really enjoy our concert band music, so most pieces that Mr. Anderson picks out. He picks a variety of genres ranging from classical to unique modern. I get to experience all of them and have enjoyed the many differences in the pieces we have played.
Q: How do you challenge yourself musically?
A: Rob Hadesbeck, my private lesson teacher, is definitely the one to challenge me most, more than myself. He has taught me so many important skills to be a good musician that I otherwise wouldn’t have. However, I do practice on my own when I can, especially before auditions or events such as All-State and State Solo & Ensemble.
Q: Are you going to pursue music as a major?
A: I will not pursue music as a major, but when I go to college, I hope to participate in either marching band or concert band. I want music to stay in my life as long as possible.
Q: What kind of opportunities has music opened you to?
A: Thanks to my lesson teacher, band directors, and encouragement of my parents, I have been able to participate in All-State band in previous years and am thankful to again this year. I have also met some of my best friends through band and have been able to take part in State Solo & Ensemble with them (trios, quartets). Playing music and being in this band has allowed me to test my limits and become a better person and musician.
