The Spartans took to the volleyball courts this past Friday in support of the Quad Cities Student Hunger Drive. Spartan Assembly put on an event they call “reverse powderpuff.” The Spartans that usually take to the volleyball courts were seen on the sidelines, as the boys of Pleasant Valley, served, set, and spiked the night away.
Reverse powderpuff is an event that Spartan Assembly hosts every year in order to try and raise funds for their efforts in the Quad Cities Student Hunger Drive. Teams consisted of 6-8 males and the cost was five dollars or five cans in order to participate. This fun event gave the boys a chance to try out their skills as volleyball players, as well as support Spartan Assembly’s efforts. Jake Lentz, senior, described, “It was a fun experience for a good cause.” Lentz was a part of a team made up of senior boys who participated in last Friday’s event. Dylan Clarke, senior, also participated in the event. Clarke commented, “It’s a clever and fun event to help our hunger drive.” There were six teams total that participated in this year’s reverse powderpuff tournament.
The energy was intense as teams arrived half an hour early just to get some practice in before the games began. There was a double elimination bracket consisting of six teams from all different grade levels. Constant action was present throughout the night. Ellie Kurth, senior, was the coach that brought her team to victory. The Blue Baboons, which consisted of players: Cole Edwards, Cooper Edwards, Caleb Stivers, Joe Clifton, Joey Dwyer, Michael Guhin, Kai Hartman, and Nathan Zable, brought home the gold winning the reverse powderpuff tournament. Kurth said,”I think it’s a great event that’s fun and competitive and raises money for a great cause.” There was a heavy competitiveness present, but the end all goal was to help raise money and cans for the student hunger drive. That alone, made the event a success.
