The District of Columbia is fighting for statehood—fighting to become “New Columbia”.
The measure made it onto the November ballot and was overwhelmingly voted to be a state during the general election this year, with 73% voting for statehood. The petition will now go to Congress for permission.
The D.C. citizens already pay federal taxes and have the responsibilities of all US citizens, yet they don’t have senatorial representation in Congress. President-elect Trump commented on the petition in NPR’s article, saying, “I would do a number of things… whatever is best for them.”
