It is hard to log in to any social media platform without seeing a new meme, or just a popular one. If you don’t know what a meme is, dictionary.com defines it as “a cultural item in the form of an image, video, phrase, etc., that is spread via the Internet and often altered in a creative or humorous way.”
Memes have taken over the internet, turning serious news into a joke. One of the memes that is the most popular right now are ones consisting of Joe Biden. These Biden memes consist of a picture of Barack Obama and Joe Biden and then a quote that refers to Joe Biden messing with Donald Trump.
Biden memes have been seen before, but have cluttered the internet since the election. This is not the first time memes have sprung from an important event. In September, memes started surfacing that joked about the devastating day 9/11.
The hashtag #BushDid911 erupted with memes about Bush’s presidency during the unfortunate event with sayings such as, “Jet fuel can’t melt steel beams.”
This poses the question, are these memes going too far?
Austin Collins, senior and meme extraordinaire, thinks, “Memes have a negative effect on the real world interactions.” He also adds, “Memes are made in order to make people laugh, not to intentionally hurt someone’s feelings.”
Others agree with Collins that these memes may provide comic relief, but can go too far. Kevin Burke, sophomore, says, “Memes are pretty funny, but I understand where people are coming from when they say it is offensive.”
Jokes will always offend others; there is no way around it. These memes were created to try to diffuse the tension, you could say to provide comical relief. For some it worked, but unfortunately, it can also spark controversy. It seems the end of memes is nowhere in sight.
