The police are here to protect us. They are here to serve the community and enforce the laws. Sometimes they get a bad rep because they do have to strictly enforce the laws. They take rules and safety seriously and sometimes their job isn’t always easy. Some cops ruin it for all the others. Lately on the news all there have been stories about cops shooting people for looking shady or abusing them during arrests, but most cops out there are good people. They want to serve and protect, but just a couple mess it up for the entire group.

In Des Moines, about two weeks ago, Scott Michael shot and killed two police officers in what has been described as an ambush-style attack. No one knows yet, why he killed the two officers in cold blood, but it is pretty obvious that he was angry. But angry at what? Police shootings have been on the rise the past couple of years. It isn’t all that understandable why others want to hurt the people that protect them.

The police should be seen as great people who served the people of this country. They have been put in some bad situations to help control riots and protect others on the streets, but just because they do what they are told or do what their training calls for, doesn’t make them bad people.

Ryan Morrissey, Former Staff Contributor
I am Ryan Morrissey. I am now a senior and I have always lived in the Pleasant Valley school district. I enjoy sports but the only one I play is baseball. It is a full time commitment going practically year around. But when I’m not playing baseball or at school, I like to play video games shoot hoops in front of my house and hang out with my friends. A couple hobbies that I have are collecting baseball cards and all star game baseball hats. The reason I took honors journalism was because I like English but, I don’t like writing long extensive papers so this just seemed like a good fit.
