Iconic issues

Mental health has become one of the most talked-about topics, especially in relation to teens. Many times, when students suffer from mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts, they feel alone. Celebrities have taken it upon themselves to begin speaking out about their own mental health.

Demi Lovato, singer, songwriter, and actor has been a voice for mental health. In 2011, Lovato entered rehab, where she dealt with eating disorders, addiction, and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Lovato believes being diagnosed with bipolar disorder helped her understand why she acted how she did, saying, “Hey, so I’m bipolar…that’s why…”

Getting help is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Lovato stated the fact, “Four out of ten people with mental illness get help.” This is why she created the Lovato Treatment Scholarship to help people pay for help.

J.K. Rowling is another celebrity who speaks out about her mental health issues. The author has talked about her depression and suicidal thoughts she had after separating from her first husband.

Rowling also has had no fear when speaking out about her depression, stating, “I have never been remotely ashamed, what is there to be ashamed of?”

Recently, another star has broken through the spotlight on her own mental health–Lady Gaga. The singer, songwriter, and actor has become open about the PTSD she has suffered from since being raped when she was 19.

Gaga talked about these struggles in an open letter on her foundation’s website, bornthisway.foundation.

In this letter, she gives the details of the pain that comes with PTSD such as dissociation, anxiety, and depression. Gaga wants people to know PTSD does not only apply to the brave men and women who protect our country; it can happen to anyone.

These celebrities stepping out is not only big for them, but for people everywhere suffering from mental health issues. It is important to know you are not alone in your fight.
