The nominees for the 59th Grammy Awards were announced on Dec. 6, so prepare for the Feb. 12 awards night just under two months away. Eyes scanning the red carpet for the pretty and ugly designer outfits may not be aware of the history behind the actual award handed out to the artists.
The first Grammy Awards night was held on May 4,1959, at two venues across the country from each other; Beverly Hills and New York City. In order to enter the competition, a recording is sent in to the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. The voters (professionals who work in the music industry) then vote in the categories, and the top five from each are selected as the nominees. Between the time the nominations are released and the awards night, final voting happens. The nominee who wins his or her category receives the Grammy, and the losing nominees receive medals.
