Losing hope: Aleppo, Syria

The world is, once again, becoming a place full of terror, war, and death. The civilians of Aleppo, Syria continue to suffer the feuding between Assad and the rebels. This massacre demonstrates how corrupt people are while in the face of power.

Aleppo used to be a major city full of commerce and lively people. Located a few miles northwest from the Turkish border, Aleppo was at one point the most populated city in Syria. Now it is considered the most dangerous place in the world.

After the Arab Spring protests in 2011, Aleppo became a renown base for rebel groups antagonistic to the Assad regime. Since 2015, the rebels have dominated Aleppo and took over the vast majority of Assad members. The loss of power infuriated Assad, which has led to the riots and killings in the city they once ruled.

Russia is a major ally of Assad, and as a result, continues to support Assad’s fight for power. They have sent warplanes and various other weapons. This gathering successfully made a statement in Aleppo, killing millions of civilians and raping thousands of women. Innocent people, who are killing themselves so they don’t have to face their once beautiful city, get crushed to the ground. Women are ending their lives so they can die without the fear of being raped by Assad’s forces.

Not only does Assad want to conquer this city; they want to make sure that there is nothing left. “The Assad regime, with significant support from Iran, imposed a blockade on rebel areas, cutting off supplies to some 320,000 people,” stated Christopher Kozak, a research analyst from The Institute for the Study of War.

Currently, Assad has taken over 90 percent of Aleppo. Millions of civilians are attempting to flee the country; unfortunately, the forces surrounding the borders are not allowing anyone to leave. Kids are dying by the numbers, women are being raped, and men are beginning to lose hope in their strength to fight Assad.
