Chapter 9: Mariah Martinez
Mariah Martinez is a sophomore here at Pleasant Valley, saying it is the only school she has ever known. She was born in Davenport and has been in the PV school district her entire life. Luckily, she says she does not mind it too much. She is the youngest of five children, with three older brothers and one older sister. Despite her large family, Martinez has developed a personality that is very unique to her. She is very outgoing and funny, and, after taking the time to get to know her, she can easily be a friend to anyone. “Everyone thinks I’m mean when they first look at me, but I’m actually a nice person,” Martinez commented.
Outside of the classroom, Martinez has also been a member of the school’s varsity bowling team for the past two years, along with participating on a bowling league during the rest of the year. In addition, she enjoys spending her time volunteering with organizations such as Royal Neighbors of America and the Optimist Club. On top of all of this, Martinez is the junior editor of the Love Girls Magazine, a volunteer position that allows her to gain valuable experience in the field of publications. This magazine is made by young girls and provides them with an opportunity to voice their opinions. Martinez is very proud of the fact that the magazine recently branched out to become a national organization instead of just a local one. Most of all, however, Martinez enjoys simply hanging out and spending time with her friends, especially when they go shopping. Martinez said, “I live right by the mall, so I am pretty much always there. It’s kind of like my second home.”
Anytime Martinez is seen around school, she will likely always be laughing and talking with those around her. According to one of Martinez’s good friends, Paige Carter, senior, “Spending time with Mariah is always fun because she is really funny. I am constantly laughing when I’m with her.” Martinez brings a very positive and lively personality to the halls of Pleasant Valley, a personality that is greatly appreciated by all those who take the time to get to know her.
