Pleasant Valley Trap team wraps up their fall season

Students participate at the 2023 state trap meet in Cedar Falls. The team won multiple awards for squad and individual performances at state.

Pleasant Valley’s trap team has seen great success in recent years. One main contribution to their success is the fall season that many top shooters participate in each year.

In the past few years, the trap team has shown accomplishments at each year’s state meet. Last year, the team even had a squad participate in the national SCTP meet, and they won the open division for handicap and placed in the top five for singles and doubles.

However, this success has not come easily for PV. Students put in plenty of effort during the regular spring season, and some choose to put in extra work to improve themselves in the fall season.

Senior Wylie Porter has participated in the fall season with hopes of improving for the spring. “It gives me more time to get some rounds in. I’ve been working with some of the coaches and learning new tricks that I’ll have to use come spring season,” commented Porter.

With fewer people participating and more time with coaches in the fall, experienced shooters are able to learn new skills and fine-tune their shot. At the same time, students enjoy the fall season simply for an opportunity to shoot more often.

“Repetition is super important. If you don’t shoot for a couple months, you’re not gonna have the same scores that you had when you last shot. You just need to keep shooting to make sure your scores are still where they’re at,” continued Porter.

Along with practice, team building in the fall is extremely important to PV’s trap season. Getting to know other varsity shooters can help students to work as a team in competition. “It’s a big team sport. You have five people total on a squad, and it takes everyone to do well in order for your squad to place at meets,” explained Porter.

The fall trap season ended last Saturday, and PV is already looking forward to the spring season and another chance to compete at state. “We did pretty well at state last year, and I think we have a lot of talent and will have another good season this spring,” commented senior trap member Cole Roush.

Students on PV’s trap team can’t wait for the official season to start during the spring, especially after an amazing fall trap season.
