There are many opportunities in high school for students to develop their character. Grades are frequently the main focus, but extracurricular activities help students grow and be better prepared to succeed in the future.
Students who participate in extracurricular activities improve their academic performance and gain confidence. Those who join organizations or sports teams can explore their interests outside of the classroom. Students are more motivated to practice self control, cooperation and time management through these activities.
For example, senior Wenjie Pan found his confidence through a club he joined. “Joining the editing club transformed me from a shy, quiet student into a confident, outgoing one by pushing me out of my comfort zone and surrounding me with supportive peers,” Pan explained.
While extracurricular activities can enhance students’ academic performance, there are concerns that packed schedules may lead to a decline in their academic achievements.
Teachers love the commitment of students but don’t want to overwhelm them with a mix of extracurriculars and academics. “The one concern would be if students add too many extracurriculars to their schedule and their academic achievement begins to suffer as a result. The key is always to find a healthy balance,” teacher Brent Keemle said.
Extracurriculars help students build self esteem, achieve their goals and develop the perseverance required to be successful in the future. If students don’t engage in activities outside of school, they may find it challenging to discover new aspects of themselves.
Friendships are easier to build when involved in extracurricular activities because there are more opportunities that arise. Students being able to socialize with new groups of people is extremely valuable, as peers can help give ideas to each other that lead students to more opportunities like internships, scholarships or different careers.
Students don’t want to miss out on extracurricular opportunities because students can find something they thoroughly enjoy. “Extracurricular activities can contribute greatly to student development. They enrich the high school experience and help students build communication and time-management skills,” Keemle explained. “They can also provide students with the opportunity to find new passions and interests.”
Clubs, sports and volunteer services bring students who have the same interests together, allowing them to connect easily through their hobbies and passions. Teachers, mentors and coaches can also guide students as they continue their professional journey.
More benefits rise from extracurricular activities than just completing a student’s schedule. They provide valuable teachings on leadership, collaboration and student development. Whether kids decide to participate in clubs, sports or volunteer work, all of these activities provide confidence and contribute to the development of versatile students.

I really resonate with this article’s perspective on extracurricular activities. They truly help us build confidence and vital life skills, while also allowing us to explore our interests and connect with others. Balancing these activities with academics is key, but the personal growth and opportunities they offer are invaluable. Extracurriculars do help in communication as you have to connect and present your opinions in front of people so that you participate in the events.
