High schools are starting to assign students less work outside of class and instead give them time in class to complete it. A lot of this schoolwork is also being done online instead of on paper.
Teachers assign homework for students to practice the concepts they learn in class. However, many students feel it is not necessary. “Sometimes I get a concept quickly and do not need as much practice, but at other times, I need more practice,” explained senior Manusri Mutyala. While students may sometimes need extra practice to understand a concept learned in class, other times they may need little to no additional practice.
Students rejoice when they do not have any homework to take home. “I like the way that many of my teachers are giving me time in class to do my school work with work days so I do not have to do much work at home,” said senior Jatin Kodavatiganti. Integrating time for school work in class provides students the ability to practice the concepts they have learned in class. This also leaves more time for students to spend on their extracurricular activities after school.
Many teachers understand students have busy schedules, so they provide students with sufficient homework deadlines. This ensures those who need more practice can build up skill, while others are less rushed and can focus on more important tasks.
Many teachers are assigning more online homework assignments compared to written ones, as they are easier for teachers to monitor and students to complete. “I like online homework because it is easier to keep track of and it shows the due date for it on the assignment,”stated Kodavatiganti. While online assignments are convenient, they can also serve as a disadvantage to student learning. While typing lets students write more words in a short time frame, students with handwritten notes and work tend to remember the information better and score better on exams.
With online homework, it is easier for students to cheat on their assignments by effortlessly sharing work with classmates. Students can also take screenshots of their homework problems and have AI tools solve their homework for them.
While there are concerns about the effect of online homework on students’ learning, the way schools assign homework is changing, and some of those changes are for the better. Students can now fit their homework into their busy schedules more easily as they are given longer periods to complete it.

As a student I like having my homework online over paper homework. It’s easier to track and teachers are more likely to grade them faster.

I believe that nowadays the teachers are using online ways to give assignments but many teachers still use the old way to assign home work. Many English teachers use paper and pen for essays because many students are using AI to write essays and cheat. This can lead to wastage of paper and rather than wasting paper teachers should find ways to detect AI essays. Homework is also necessary for many students and even though they are important it should be optional and just like a resource for students to study. This can lead to students who understand topics easily having no pressure of completing assignments and no overuse of paper.
