With Thanksgiving landing on Nov. 28 this year, the latest it could possibly be, many shoppers are feeling the stress of the condensed holiday season and are experiencing challenges due to the increased craze of errands and preparations.
Due to the annual inflation, the average American is expected to spend 3.5% more on Christmas than in previous years. It is estimated the average American will not financially recover from this Christmas until May of 2025 at the earliest. The holiday season holds high stakes for shoppers and businesses alike.
Getting the right gift for loved ones and friends is a high priority for most Americans. The shorter holiday season means less time to figure out what that gift should be, as well as higher chances that those items will sell out. “I don’t feel pressure from anyone but myself to get the perfect gift, but I do want to get something that shows how much I care about a person,” senior Cait Quinn said.
For businesses, the holiday season is essential for financial success. With the condensed season, many businesses tried to optimize profits by increasing early shopper traffic. Stores must fight for shoppers’ business in a much shorter time frame, and many decided to emphasize their deals to promote their Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales. “I have noticed an increase in promotions and deals. I think it is because they are trying to make it easier for those who struggle to give gifts each year,“ senior Sidney Love said.
For some shoppers who typically choose to wait until after Thanksgiving to start shopping, this season can feel like chaos. “I can see how those who need to plan a lot of holiday events could feel rushed and stressed, personally that doesn’t affect me but I can see where it could induce stress,“ said Quinn.
The financial aspect of the reduced time period factors in as well. The 27 days between the holidays will typically only yield one to two paychecks for the majority of Americans. With normal living expenses plus the cost of everything holiday related, the 2024 holiday season is likely to be rough for Americans.
All things considered, this holiday season has the potential to be challenging in a variety of ways for those who celebrate this time of year. If able, donating to a charity or foundation that helps those in need during the holidays can ease this financial burden for those struggling with the stresses of the season.
