The nonprofit organization One Eighty annually hosts a Christmas party for its residents and program members. This year’s party, which took place on Friday, Dec. 13 was a success for all involved.
One Eighty focuses on reintegrating its members into society in a healthy way. They provide resources for individuals recovering from difficult situations such as addiction or abuse. One Eighty offers numerous programs for residents, lasting for a little over a year and bringing groups of people together to support one another in their paths to recovery.
Now in its seventh year, the One Eighty Christmas party is a fantastic opportunity for residents to connect with others. One Eighty helps reestablish familial bonds between parents and their children and uses the party as one way to do this.
The event provided food, games and photo opportunities with Santa, all activities recovering parents can use to bond with their kids. “The one-eighty Christmas party is all about restoring relationships and helping the people we serve to feel loved and valued,” shared Jenny Halupnik, One Eighty’s Director of Engagement.
The Christmas party was filled with holiday spirit, providing residents and their families a chance to enjoy themselves in a positive environment.
One Eighty also helps bridge parents and kids with Christmas presents. “All of our residents in long-term recovery get a gift. And so do all their kids,” said Halupnik. “Our residents with kids get the chance to wrap the gifts for their children and give it to them during the party.”
Participating in holiday traditions, such as gift-giving, can ease tension between strained relationships. Volunteers and supporters helped create such a strong community within the organization.
“Several churches, businesses and individuals ‘adopt’ our residents in recovery and their children for Christmas. They take their wish list and shop for their needs in a very personal and generous way,” Halupnik added. This special tradition aided in fostering new bonds between everyone involved.
Along with organizations’ involvement, students get involved in One Eighty’s mission. PVHS students helped with this year’s Christmas party, including junior Mia Stocking, who has worked with One Eighty in the past and enjoyed the event. “I loved seeing the kids and attendees open their gifts. Everyone seemed so happy to be there, and I loved being there to take pictures of all the fun moments,” said Stocking.
Attendees were seen smiling and enjoying themselves at the party, surrounded by family and a supportive community. “It really is so cool to have such a great community to help us make Christmas special for people who are rebuilding their lives,” Halupnik reflected. One Eighty has helped numerous families and individuals rebuild their lives in positive, sustainable ways, bringing hope to all kinds of people.
