Endocrine disruptors are chemical compounds that interfere with the functioning of the endocrine system. They have been known to be linked with developmental abnormalities, increasing the risk of various diseases later in life when exposed earlier in life.
Endocrine disruptors are found in products that are used every day; they are known to harm human bodies. People have been more aware of these toxic chemicals, making product switches that are better for their health.
Not only can these chemicals potentially cause hormonal imbalances, but they can influence mood, metabolism, growth and development too. They are also known for causing the development of tumors or impacting genetic factors.
Cosmetics, toys, furniture, food and beverage packages are known to contain endocrine disruptors. The NYU Langone Study wrote, “Daily exposure to chemicals called phthalates, which are used in the manufacture of plastic food containers and many cosmetics, may lead to roughly 100,000 premature deaths among older Americans each year, a new study shows.” Due to this, people are starting to act more conscious of the products they use on a daily basis.
To protect yourself from these harmful chemicals, especially while cooking, avoid putting plastic containers in the microwave.. Choosing to use stainless steel cooking utensils or glass pans instead of black plastic cooking utensils or non-stick pans is the safer choice.
It is also recommended to steer clear of receipts, which are composed of toxic thermal paper coated in more harmful chemicals like bisphenol A (BPA) or bisphenol S (BPS). “Our bodies can absorb it when we touch paper coated with them,” stated Green Impact.
As people have gained more knowledge and learned about how the harsh chemicals impact their bodies, individuals now tend to think twice before touching or buying items. Senior Sophia Romans, conveyed, “I definitely avoid receipts and also candles that have those chemicals (endocrine disruptors) in them.” Romans are not the only ones.
Many healthcare professionals recommend avoiding chemicals as well. A nurse at Trinity Hospital in Moline stated, “I do recommend you be more cautious with the chemicals you surround yourself with because they do tend to affect your health negatively. But I don’t think you should let your concerns take over your life.” While it is important to be aware of these circumstances, some people’s reactions tend to go overboard.
As toxic chemicals are more known and people are more informed it allows for the society to grow as a whole.
