For years Disney had established themselves as a powerhouse making movies that people remembered for years to come. But Disney’s not reign of dominance is coming to an end and being replaced by new found sloppiness.
Disney has produced many classic movies that most people could name off the top of their head. Many of these movies are considered to be the greatest of all time and have a lasting impact on people’s lives.
As of recently, however, Disney has had sloppy production and failed to meet the standards they set themselves as a company years ago.
New releases such as Wish and Elemental have been massive flops despite the large amount of funding poured into them. Most people didn’t even know these movies existed or were coming out soon.
“ ‘Wish’ reportedly had a budget of $200 million, per ScreenRant, and needed to make at least $400 million at the box office to be considered a financial success, in order to account for production, marketing, and cinema costs. Having only made ~$23 million in profit, it’s safe to call the film a box office failure,” wrote Brit Tuttle.
Box office flops haven’t been the only thing not going Disnye’s way recently. Many sequels have been released that have lacked quality and originality. The only reason these movies performed well at all was their tie to the original movie.
Moana 2 is an example of this lazy sequel trend from Disney. “In 2020, during the peak of the entertainment industry’s love affair with streaming, a follow-up to Disney’s Animated hit ‘Moana’ was destined to become a television series for Disney+,” stated Rebecca Rubin.
Audiences can tell that the movie was originally a three show TV series. There are times the movie feels very clunky or doesn’t flow and this is the reason why. Instead of feeling like one movie all together, it still is reminiscent of its old TV self.
Disney continues to make mediocre sequels that only perform because of the name they are tied to. “Growing up I loved watching Disney movies. They played a huge role in my life and it’s sad to see them switch to these lower standards,” commented Junior Zachary Zuiderveen.
Disney has lost the respect of many viewers because of the apparent cash grabs they have been going for. They need to turn this around and start making quality original content again if they wish to regain support in the future.
