PV Model United Nations (MUN) club offers students a plethora of opportunities that propel members to success in their future endeavors.
Many of the skills learned or enhanced through Model UN are transferable in a variety of ways. “The club prepares students with the skills of public speaking, researching, collaboration and time management, but it is also a very reputable club that looks good on resumes and students can continue MUN at many colleges in America,” said Model United Nations club President Asmita Bag.
Additionally, the researching skills acquired through Model UN are beneficial for any type of research. Acquiring reliable information is crucial in today’s society, and knowing where to find trustworthy information is key. In Model UN, they educate their members on proper researching techniques and how to utilize their resources to the best of their abilities.
Students learn about different countries’ perspectives on issues and brainstorm ideas to solve real world problems through their research and collaboration. Not only do they get to enhance their research skills, but they also learn how to properly write a formal research paper.
Learning about different countries’ stances and real world issues can be incredibly compelling for students. Majority of students in the United States are somewhat aware of events happening in their home country, but are not well versed in global issues. Being informed about global and local issues can help students develop stances and opinions that could potentially impact voting and community involvement.
Furthermore, students have the opportunity to represent their own cultures and learn more about their peers during the club’s largest fundraiser of the year, International Night. While immense growth is done through research and other opportunities within the club, there are also hands-on experiences. Model UN welcomes members of all backgrounds and encourages involvement of any kind. “It’s a lot of fun and has a place for everyone!,” added Bag.
One of the main opportunities through Model UN is the conferences. The UNI conference is the largest conference that PV Model UN club attends. This gives students the chance to utilize what they have learned and discuss their research amongst delegates of other schools within the state of Iowa. If students present outstanding performance, they could be eligible for an outstanding delegate award as well.
Through conference attendance, public speaking skills can be enhanced for members. From speaking in small groups within tables, to going up to a microphone to speak in front of a large audience to have their voices heard. “Model UN has helped me be a better and more confident public speaker. I intend to use this extension into school presentations and assignments as well as a future job,” sophomore club member Nathaniel Pielak said.
While members are modeling the United Nations, their voices are very much heard. One of the conference opportunities, the Iowa Youth Symposium, sends off their final resolution drafts to the UN in New York to be considered.
Model United Nations club offers students many opportunities for growth in school and beyond the classroom. From public speaking, collaboration and researching, Model United Nations club is highly recommended by its members and alumni.
