Based on the novel by Lori Nelson Spielman, “The Life List” is a 2025 romantic comedy starring Sofia Carson and Kyle Allen. The story follows Alex (Carson), who, after her mother passes, is left with a unique challenge: complete a bucket list of goals Alex had made as a teenager in order to receive her inheritance. Each time she completes an item, she is granted a corresponding DVD from her late mother, delivered by her lawyer, Brad (Allen).
Stuck in an unfulfilling relationship and career, Alex is forced to revisit former aspirations and rethink the direction of her life. As she checks items off the list, she begins to reconnect with the person she used to dream of becoming, rekindling a relationship with her father and starting a new one with Brad. Alex embarks on the journey of a lifetime, both literally and emotionally.
The most difficult item on the list is for Alex to fall in love. She breaks up with her uninspired boyfriend and seeks out someone she could truly love. In her search, she grows closer with her lawyer, Brad, forming an unexpected bond that sparks a romance.
Over the course of a year, her life is transformed. She becomes the teacher she dreamt of becoming, and grows more confident. She rediscovers happiness and fulfillment, inspiring viewers to reflect on their own forgotten goals. “The Life List” is a reminder that people don’t have to outgrow their childhood dreams and that comfort and routine shouldn’t be the only things dictating the future.
Instead of going through the motions of life or living up to societal expectations, the film pushes people to step outside of their comfort zone. While Alex had the motive of an inheritance and messages from her mother as incentive to achieve her goals, the story shows that anyone has the ability to change course and redirect their life.
The cinematography of the film complements the hopeful tone and the beautiful journey that Alex goes on as she rediscovers herself. “The Life List” is more than a romantic comedy, it’s an inspirational story about staying true to yourself and chasing your dreams no matter what.
Whether it’s learning how to play piano, reading more books, reconnecting with someone from the past or falling in love, the movie reminds viewers that growth comes from doing the things that may seem scary or impossible.
“The Life List” is a reminder to revisit neglected goals and dreams. With heart and humor the film encourages people to let go of their fears and reflect on aspirations they may have left behind, it serves as a reminder that it’s never too late to start living.
