In a constantly changing society, culture must adapt and change over time. Hollywood has chosen to adapt in an unpredictable way– artificial intelligence.
Tilly Norwood is the latest name seen in major headlines-but for an unconventional reason. Norwood is an AI-generated actress, created by Particle6, an artificial intelligence production company. The CEO, Eline Van der Velden, claimed that the artificial actress is an expression of her own creativity, but many claim that using artificial intelligence as an art form defeats the real purpose of creativity, originality and inspiration.
AI has overtaken the basic foundations of how the general public thinks, creates and learns. Simple add-ons to online desktops constantly threaten the integrity of original work. For many educators, project leads, actors and directors, artificial intelligence doesn’t represent innovation; it represents a threat to livelihood. “I feel like AI has become a crutch for so many people, and it is slowly becoming the death of critical thinking,” said junior Addie Belman.
Artificial intelligence creates prompts from information that the database has gathered over time from the internet. This replaces original thoughts from a human brain with jumbled and preexisting concepts. This poses a real danger to the beauty of individuality and diversity, especially in industries such as Hollywood.
Acting has been built upon the basis of presence, experience and relatability. A human performance conveys true expressions and emotions felt from the actors personal experiences. Replicating this with artificial intelligence will take the authenticity out of the media. “As an aspiring actor I find it incredibly frustrating that I put in all this effort to be beat out by a computer,” shared junior Charleigh Weatherspoon.
Reactions from within Hollywood have been critical. Director Luca Guardagino described the arrival of AI as “the end of the industry.” Norwood marked a turning point in the view of artificial intelligence in the work force. The overuse of AI gives corporations unprecedented power to create and earn money off of anything they desire to create. “It is scary knowing how much our society relies and profits off of AI,” shared Weatherspoon.
Norwood is less of a star and more of a symbol of unnecessary power. The rise in artificial intelligence has become too large to ignore, and the fight for creativity has truly begun.
