Formula 1, a strategic wheel-to-wheel sport, is heating up as the end of the season nears. Even though McLaren has already claimed the Constructor’s World Championship title, their two drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, are in an intense battle against each other to win the Driver’s Championship. Norris leads the competition by one point over his teammate Piastri. Piastri has led the championship for 15 consecutive races until Norris won the Mexican Grand Prix.
However, there is a third contender in the mix. Max Verstappen remains 36 points behind Norris. Many fans believe that with four races remaining, Verstappen could beat the two McLaren drivers. He already has claimed four World Championships, and his extensive years of experience have showcased itself on the race track; in 2023, he won 18 of the 22 races that took place.
Many fans are returning to watch F1 again because of this close championship fight. The United States Grand Prix reported a 14% increase in ABC viewership compared to last year. Other races were thought of as boring due to McLaren’s dominance, but Verstappen joining the top competition has shown more engagement. “The races are still McLaren dominated, but I like watching them more knowing that Max has a chance to win. It’s making them more entertaining now that something is actually on the line,” said senior Bruno Mezzomo.
With this newfound interest in the sport, PV’s very own Formula 1 club has rekindled and will be hosting a meeting to watch the final race. The club’s last meeting was in September of 2024, but club executives are excited to assemble. “We stopped meeting due to lack of attendance, but many of our members are seniors who want to meet up again,” shared vice president Ellie Ziegelbein.
F1 Club operated mainly during the 2023-2024 school year and met on Thursday mornings. Members are also discussing relaunching the club after the upcoming watch party. Their next steps are gathering new attendees who are interested in learning more about racing.
Formula 1 has become a popular sport at PV as F1 has moved into large promotion efforts in the United States. The current championship battle is also boosting this engagement within the country. Many fans are getting excited for what is to come and feel very intensely about the sport. Senior Ashley Hansen said, “We can only sit back and pray that Max saves us all.”
Max Verstappen’s championship charge may be a lofty goal, but many PV students see it as a riveting watch. With only a few races left, the battle can only get hotter.
