It has been impossible to ignore the major construction happening at the high school this fall. The cafeteria, a central hub for student life, has taken on a new, renovated life.
What began as a dedicated summer project stretched into the fall semester, and it left many students actively immersed in what felt like an ongoing construction zone. Student reactions were mixed, ranging from excitement to frustration.
For many, the cafeteria served as a spot to converse with their friends and hide away from the overwhelming nature of the classroom. With lunch seating limited during the renovation period, lunch periods looked and felt very different from the years prior. “It was an adjustment,” said senior Isabella Yarbrough, “Lunch felt cramped, and people were spread out all over the building. I ate lunch in the commons to avoid the chaos.”
Others shared similar frustrated sentiments. While the construction was inconvenient, students knew the discomfort was temporary, and the school was working towards major improvements.
As construction progressed, anticipation from the student body began to increase. Students watched the progression of the new space on their walk to grab food each day. These new adjustments included new flooring, additional seating and a more open layout, which eventually came together.
On Dec. 8, the cafeteria was officially reopened to the student body. Staff and student reactions quickly shifted from eagerness to enthusiasm. “It seems a lot bigger and brighter now. You don’t have to rush to get a seat anymore, either. It’s definitely a better overall experience,” said sophomore Maeli Sanchez Carmona.
Beyond convenience, students have said that the renovations have changed the overall atmosphere of the school. “You can tell that the administration really cares about making the school the best it can be,” commented Yarbrough. The cafeteria has now become a symbol of growth and immense improvement.
As students settle into the cafeteria, it is clear that the space has reclaimed its function as a student-intended sanctuary, serving as the center of student voices. The cafeteria isn’t simply a large gathering room; it is the center of student voices and the heart of the school.
