Every spring, thousands of athletes gather at the Drake Relays for one of the most prestigious track meets in the state. Known for its elite competition, the event gives high school athletes the chance to compete against some of their best peers.
For many athletes, qualifying for the Drake Relays alone is an immense accomplishment. Freshman runner Sarah Foad described the experience as unforgettable. “Running at the Drake Relays is so electrifying. The huge crowd wrapped around you, cheering you on, is an incredible feeling,” Foad said.
Unlike most meets, the Drake Relays combine athletes from every class division. That means competitors go up against the best runners in the state, regardless of school size.
According to Foad, this level of competition pushes athletes to give their best effort and remain focused on their goals. “The level of competition at the Drake Relays is the best of the best in the state,” she said. “The intense competition provides a great opportunity to run fast times, meet competitors from different schools, and act as a dress rehearsal for the state track meet.”
Another Pleasant Valley track and field athlete, senior Joe Knepp, reflected on the impact of the event and the memories created through the meet. “The Drake Relays are a really special event,” Knepp said. “Only the top athletes from across the state qualify and are able to compete there. It was an honor to be able to compete there, and it’ll be a memory I remember forever.”
Beyond the races and the competitors themselves, the atmosphere surrounding the iconic meet leaves a lasting impression on athletes and spectators alike. From packed stands to the unmistakable school spirit, the Drake Relays creates an experience unlike any other in Iowa high school sports.
For the athletes who have worked for the opportunity to compete at this meet, the Drake Relays are more than just another sporting event. This competition is a chance to test themselves and prove they are among Iowa’s top high school track and field athletes.
