At Pleasant Valley High School on May 1, seniors gathered to celebrate one of the biggest milestones of their high school careers: National Decision Day. Decorated tables, college signs and pathways ranging from universities to military service filled the commons as students publicly shared their plans for life after graduation.
Behind the celebration, however, was a group of counselors and staff members who organized the event, purchased snacks and created an environment that recognized every student’s plans equally.
National Decision Day is traditionally held across the country on May 1 to honor graduating seniors and their postsecondary commitments. At Pleasant Valley, the event showcased a wide range of pathways, including four-year universities, community colleges, gap years, military enlistment and workforce opportunities.
“To me, this is truly a showcase of each senior making their own decision for their future life,” PV counselor Ellie Thomas said. “For so long, our students are told what to study. While we have a lot of options for courses, there is still very little freedom of choice. It’s so exciting to see the individual path each student has selected for themself.”
Unlike events that focus solely on college admissions, PV’s Decision Day emphasized all future pathways equally. Students were encouraged to wear apparel representing their next steps. whether it was a university sweatshirt or clothing connected to future careers and programs, the counselors accommodated for all and had signs for each postsecondary path.
The event also gave students an opportunity to reflect on how far they have come since entering high school. For many seniors, the public celebration marked a moment when their plans for the future finally felt real.
PV senior Kailee Wilson shared her experience at the Decision Day celebration. “It made me feel proud of myself and my peers for all the hard work we’ve put in,” Wilson said. “It also felt good to be recognized for all of our effort.”
Throughout the lunch periods, students took advantage of the well-designed displays, took photos with friends and congratulated each other on their future plans. The atmosphere was energetic and supportive as seniors shared where they would be heading after graduation.
While the celebration itself lasted only one day, the preparation behind it reflected the dedication of PVHS staff. By arriving early, organizing material and ensuring that every student would be recognized for their efforts, they created an event that celebrated the accomplishments of the graduating class as a whole.
“National Decision Day celebrates the hard work that each of our seniors has put in,” Thomas said. “It’s a day to celebrate their past accomplishments, while also showcasing their future choice and the excitement that comes with it. We are so proud of each student.”
As the school year comes to a close, National Decision Day serves as both a celebration of achievement and a reminder that success after high school can take after many different forms. Through the efforts of PVHS staff, seniors were able to celebrate not only where they are going next year, but also the hard work that brought them there.
