Updated drone protocol

As the age of technology advances, so do the rules that come along with it. In the past couple of years, drones have been picking up speed in terms of popularity, whether they are company-owned or just for personal use. For example, Amazon uses drones to deliver packages to people’s front doors. Recently the Federal Aviation Admission (FAA), released an expansive list of rules and regulations for peoples who fly drones. Among the more significant rules are the following:

  • Unmanned aircraft must weigh less than 55 pounds (25 kg)
  • Unmanned aircraft must never leave sight of the person controlling it (camera with a monitor attached doesn’t count as “in sight”)
  • Unmanned aircrafts cannot be flown over a height of 400 feet
  • In order to fly an unmanned aircraft, the visibility level must be no less than 3 miles

A general rule that has always applied is to be safe and not put yourself or anyone in danger of injury. For the complete list of rules and regulations you can visit  http://www.faa.gov/uas/media/Part_107_Summary.pdf.

Ryan Morrissey, Former Staff Contributor
I am Ryan Morrissey. I am now a senior and I have always lived in the Pleasant Valley school district. I enjoy sports but the only one I play is baseball. It is a full time commitment going practically year around. But when I’m not playing baseball or at school, I like to play video games shoot hoops in front of my house and hang out with my friends. A couple hobbies that I have are collecting baseball cards and all star game baseball hats. The reason I took honors journalism was because I like English but, I don’t like writing long extensive papers so this just seemed like a good fit.

Drone restrictions have been non exist, because of this it has become an issue over the past year. This forced the government to create restrictions. I am glad to see the government take the first step towards creating drone safety and privacy.
