This fall, the Pleasant Valley Drama Club will be performing Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Sweeney Todd is a musical thriller that follows the infamous tale of the return of Sweeney Todd, an unjustly exiled barber, to nineteenth century London. While seeking revenge on those who banished him, Todd meets Mrs. Lovett, a local baker, who is in need of fresh meat for her pies.
Performances will take place on November 3rd and 5th at 7:00 P.M. and on November 6th at 2:00 P.M. in the PVHS theatre.
There is more that goes into selecting a musical than one might expect. Theatre Director William Myatt said, “Throughout a student’s high school career, I want to try to provide them a range of opportunities.” Myatt explained that Sweeney Todd is different from other musicals that have been done at PV because “Sweeney offers us the opportunity to explore a lot of acting through the musical, not as much dance, and it’s a different style of music than we have done in the past.”
Sweeney Todd has always been on Myatt’s bucket list, but he has never had the opportunity to do it. Myatt said, “This is the first year that I have been able to do this show because of the difficulty of music, because this year we have the musicians that can handle it.”
Bailey Connors, a junior, who will be playing Sweeney Todd, said he is most excited to see the ensemble pieces come together because “the music is so intricate and well thought out, and I think it’s going to be a blast to hear those intricate harmonies that are all perfectly melded together come into fruition.”
Those planning to attend have even more than the music to look forward to. Connors also said, “The people that are onstage are definitely going to be giving their all; it’s a very heavy show that’s sprinkled with comedic elements. People can definitely look forward to the comedy, and the acting on stage is going to be fantastic. And the killings. The killings are super fun.”
The school is filled with anticipation for the debut of this intriguing show.
