Not so sly Fox News

Recently the Russian-Trump scandal has been heating up as the first arrests of the Mueller investigation have been made. Former chairman for the Trump campaign Paul Manafort has been arrested along with George Papadopoulos, a former campaign aide. This could spell big news for the Trump administration if Manafort or Papadopoulos have information that they could reveal for a lighter sentence. With the huge implications these arrests imply it is no surprise that almost every news station was covering the breaking news. However, while MSNBC was talking about possible treason, Fox News was very selective in its coverage of the historic event. Many stations were airing the Manafort news around the clock, while Fox News aired it sparingly preferring to talk about upcoming possible tax reforms and the like.

When Fox News did talk about the Manafort arrest they talked about how this is not related to Trump or his administration. Tucker Carlson, a political commentator for Fox News, even said that the ‘real’ Russian scandal was with the DNC and Hillary Clinton.

However, not everyone thinks this lack of coverage is malicely done “Each reporter only has so much time, each news agency only has so many reporters, and the simple fact is, the news agency’s know what kind of stories the people who subscribe want to be informed about.” said Alex Hammer, a Republican who often watches Fox News. “This business is run by a board, who is controlled by the stockholders. The duty (by governmental law) of the company is to make as much money as it can for the stockholders. This means that if all your consumers are right wing, you will run stories about the left being detrimental to the country.”

It is well know that Fox News is a conservative news station that President Trump watches frequently. This likely lead to them not wanting to talk about the story in a negative light for the Trump administration. Even Fox employees were disappointed with the way this story was handled, an anonymous Fox News employee told CNN that the coverage was embarrassing. “I’m watching now and screaming, I want to quit.”

Journalism covering important events that will be in future history books should not be something that is brushed to the side. Today, biased journalism is commonly seen on all sides of the political spectrum. The truth is not always something that fits with our image or ideal of a person or group, but when it is this important the truth should not be left to rot.

Couldn’t it be bias that you’re only focusing on Fox News when they aren’t the only ones that share news(or rather not share news) in this fashion? 🙂 <3 I feel like this is just common sense though, why write an article about it?
