Brockhampton, Self-proclaimed boy band from California, just released their 3rd album this year: the conclusion the the Saturation series, “Saturation 3.” This last album attempted to encapsulate the entire Saturation series in one cohesive well produced creative experiment with hip hop. A full length documentary and over 20 demos were released along with all three albums in a recent box set; plans for a full length movie were also announced.
Brockhampton was formed by Kevin Abstract, the group’s frontman and most known rapper, in 2015 through the internet forum KanyeToThe. It is an artistic collective composed of producers, rappers, singers, photographers and managers that were inspired by The Social Network. The group is known for its refreshing pop/hip hop combination, storyline throughout the series, and quirky videos. BOOGIE and RENTAL were 2 singles released for this last album.
No group since Odd Future has had such an impact on hip hop as Brockhampton has. The Odd Future comparisons tend to end there though. Tyler and Earl were by far the standouts in OF but Brockhampton projects are most definitely a collaborative group effort. They have topped other groups and labels sponsored artists with immense resources by putting out consistently great content in a short time.
If one thing stands out about Brockhampton, it is how they have taken what was originally a hip hop formula and tinkered with it. Varying styles from hip hop, the song STAR, pop, the song HOTTIE, to emotional guitar ballads, the song WASTE, fill up their expansive discography.
Before even releasing Saturation 3, the group announced their upcoming album Team Effort. Since the Saturation trilogy ended, expecting a certain type of music from the group is hard but one thing is certain, Brockhampton is here to stay.
