Chapter 14: Adam Arms
Adam Arms is a junior here at Pleasant Valley. However, he is fairly new to the school. His family just moved to the area from Missouri last year, meaning he did not become a Spartan until his sophomore year. Moving during high school would make for a difficult adjustment for anyone, but luckily, Arms said his transition was not too bad. He commented, “I like PV. It’s really just a high school, but it is not that bad.”
Throughout his schooling, Arms has seen a large amount of success in the classroom. Barb Pischke, Arms’ math teacher, said, “Adam is one of the smartest young men I have in class. He is a very hard-working individual.”
Outside of school, Arms enjoys building things and working with computers. He explained how his favorite subjects in school have always been physics and engineering because he enjoys seeing how things work. When he is older, he hopes to become an engineer.
“I am not exactly sure how I became interested in building things and technology. I have just always found it interesting, and it is something that I really enjoy doing. I like learning about how things are made and think it is cool to be a part of that process,” Arms said.
In addition, Arms spends a lot of his time working at Jimmy Johns. Other than that, he always enjoys hanging out with his friends and having a good time.
Although only a junior, Arms has already begun the process of preparing for his future. He says he will most likely attend college at the University of Iowa. There, he hopes to be involved in the ROTC program, and he would eventually like to join the military.
Arms is not the loudest student at Pleasant Valley, but he is still making a huge impact around school. He is known as a very kind individual who truly cares about those around him. Pischke said, “Adam is very chill and modest. He would do anything for anyone.”
Chapter 6: Brooke Goy

It’s hard to go through major changes in life, and Brooke Goy has been through quite a few in the past few years. Brooke is fairly new to PV, having just moved here from Chicago in 7th grade. Brooke said that it was extremely hard to adjust here because she didn’t know anyone and she didn’t have any friends. “I acted differently than everyone else around here,” she said. “I opened up more here and I was shier in the city, but now I’m friends with a lot of people.” Brooke also added the summer she moved, she was around her parents for a majority of the time before starting a new school year in a new district. Brooke has experienced another major change very recently as well, being that she is currently in her first semester of high school. “It’s better than eighth grade, but you just have to figure out what you have to do to do well.”
Brooke is very athletic and finds a lot of joy in sports. She has played basketball, track, and soccer, and she plans on being a part of the soccer team this Spring, a sport she has been playing since fifth grade. She also loves to lift, saying that weightlifting was one of her favorite classes. Her enjoyment of sports has also influenced what she dreams of doing, which is being a physical therapist. Brooke described her love of sports and desire to help people is what makes physical therapy a dream of hers.
Brooke is just who she seems to be when you first meet her: kind, compassionate, and a social butterfly. Being with her friends and talking to people are what make her happy, and her desire to make other people happy is her prime motivator in life. Brooke is a perfect example of the qualities that Pleasant Valley embodies, and her strong desire to achieve her dreams, as well as her outgoing personality, will take her far in high school and beyond.
