The Freight House Farmers Market in downtown Davenport is something that many people are aware of but aren’t sure if it is worth their time to go down and visit.
The farmers market is so much more than just a place to get locally grown fruits and veggies. There are things such as locally produced meat, handmade bracelets, and matcha tea grown from a family farm in Japan. There are also coffee and food trucks to keep your energy up while walking through the giant farmers market. Mindi Allison, a frequent customer at the Freight House Farmers Market said, “I love going to the farmers market because there are always new things to look at and I can always buy fresh fruit that is much cheaper than what it would be at the grocery store.”
One of the most popular stands at the farmers market is a family bakery from a small city in Iowa. Every Friday night, the family packages up all of their baked goods and prepares for the busy Saturday they will have. The family puts a lot into their bakery, and coming to the farmers market gives them a reputation also while making a good deal of money.
Another popular stand to visit is the flower stand. At this stand, there are always several varieties of fresh flowers to choose from. There are even bouquets of flowers in nice vases to buy for only about 8 dollars. This is one of the most popular stands at the farmers market because the flowers are cheap and always more fresh than what those at a normal grocery store would be.
The farmers market is also great because it’s a way for local college students to get fresh food and even decorations for their homes for very cheap. College student Nicole Saaf said, “The farmers market is great for me and my friends because we can get a lot of fresh ingredients to make meals for the week. Honestly, the farmers market is helping a lot of us to save money on things we need, and the food is almost always in better condition than what it would be at the grocery store!”
The outdoor Freight House Farmers Market is open every Saturday from 8 o’clock to 1 o’clock, every Sunday from 10 o’clock to 2 o’clock, and every Wednesday 8 o’clock to 1 o’clock from May through October. The indoor farmers market is open the same hours as the outdoor market, except the indoor market is open year round!
