Sweater weather is upon us, and with the start of a new season comes new trends and challenges that rise among individuals of all ages. Social media is a popular hub for the genesis of these new trends. This fall season has brought a new art challenge to Instagram that students can participate in by using #inktober on their social media posts. Inktober gives students the opportunity to share their work and inspire one another’s creativity.
Each day in the month of October a new word is given to artists as inspiration for what they will create. In the photos displayed above, PV alum Olivia Peters and PV senior Jei Velleriestra each drew their interpretation of the #inktoberday5 word, which is ‘chicken’. They each drew their own image of fear or what being chicken means to them.
Peters has been actively participating in the #inktober challenge. She said, “Inktober is a really fun challenge that helps a ton in encouraging practice with ink and stretching your imagination!” A few of Peters’ creations can be found on her instagram along with hashtag #inktober and a label for which day the drawing goes along with.
Students like Peters as well as individuals of all ages have been taking part in this social media challenge. When students share their artwork with one another, it helps them to see new ideas surrounding a certain word or concept.
Velleriestra has been getting very involved with the challenge as well, staying loyal to the daily schedule of words. Drawing provides many with the opportunity to express themselves. Velleriestra agrees, “I love drawing because I can articulate my thoughts in ways I have trouble with verbally. I see the world very intricately and I like to reflect that in my art.” Velleriestra’s intricate views of the world can indeed be viewed in each detailed creation.
When students encourage other students to get involved in something that is happening throughout an entire social media platform, it allows them to connect to one another and create more of a community with their art. More students’ art can be seen on popular social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter by searching #inktober
