Christmas is said to be “the most wonderful time of the year.” The colors are great, the sweaters are wonderful, the house lights are extravagant and don’t even get me started on the presents, but when is it too early to begin looking forward to it?
It seems like the world thinks the second it’s too cold for sandals is the second the Christmas craze can commence, but for Iowa that weather can begin as early as September. Tweets are posted every day talking about how excited people are for Christmas, even though we haven’t even hit Halloween yet. Spencer Althouse, a journalist for Buzzfeed, posted, “October is almost here, which means it’s basically Thanksgiving. Guys, Christmas is next week.”
That is wrong. Everyone seems to forget all about the other holidays we celebrate in between! It’s only the beginning of October, and instead of hearing about Halloween costumes and frightening haunted houses, all I hear is “Its almost Christmas!” If I do hear about the other holidays, it’s a slight mention in a Christmas meme post.
Thanksgiving is another holiday that isn’t getting the recognition it deserves. It’s literally the definition of a food holiday. A graduate from PV’s class of 2018, Jacob Dougherty, said, “Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday! Where else can I be put in a food coma? Why would anyone want to skip that?” Instead of thinking of the pilgrims, we think of it as the pre-Christmas family dinner, and the beginning of the Christmas shopping rage. So many people look forward to Black Friday more than they do actual Thanksgiving.
The day after Thanksgiving isn’t only Black Friday, but it’s considered to be the designated day to begin listening to Christmas music. In an article written by Mike Russell he said, “In the USA it’s generally accepted that the real Christmas countdown begins the day after Thanksgiving and radio stations will begin to playlist Xmas tunes to get listeners into the festive spirit. Some start as early as the day after Halloween!”
I think that is way too soon. For me to even consider listening to Christmas music, there has to at least be snow on the ground and it has to be December, but you can still catch your Christmas tunes on Mix FM starting Nov. 23.
