Technology has slowly made its way into all aspects of life, including school, and there is no escaping it. In this age, almost every classroom can be found with various types of new equipment.
To writing things down again and only using technology when necessary, it’s time we go back to the basics. Schools need to rediscover how to operate without the need for WiFi and computers in every classroom.
The need for technology in schools has grown from the new widespread use of Google classroom. Most teachers at PVHS use Google Classroom in order to assign and receive homework from their students.
At a young age students are being taught to use technology rather than a basic paper and pencil. Google classroom is implemented through all PV schools including elementary. Students as young as fourth grade need technology in order to complete their work.
Online means for students to complete their work can be very convenient for teachers but there comes a time when the constant use of technology becomes tiring.
PVHS art teacher Aimee Peters stated “Technology has made photography so much easier but at the same time with everything being web based, if something goes down, it is difficult to complete anything in class.” Peters said.
Schools have survived hundreds of years without computers. And now with technology running our lives, there needs to be places that don’t exist solely online.
It can be great when it works but when technology fails, there is nothing else to do. Many classes at PVHS rely on whether or not the WiFi is working. Junior Emma Irons said “Technology can be useful at times but it’s not always going to work,” she said.
Using Google classroom to post notes and other materials eliminates the process of learning. Studies have shown that students who write things on paper have a better chance of remembering what is being learned for the future.
Rather than going straight to a computer to complete an assignment, students should be able to grab a pencil and begin their work.
Students’ lives are already packed full of phones, computers and other technological advancements. It is time we revert to a time when all a student needed was a pencil.
