A snowy climate in Iowa means an increase in free time, spend this time doing things you enjoy.

Whether you are tied down at home for a part-time job or your family simply loves to be in their own house for the holidays, winter break can get quite boring after a week of drinking hot cocoa and watching Hallmark movies all day. These five places will bring joy and excitement to your holiday endeavors this winter:

  • TBK Bettplex

The Bettplex boasts a wide variety of affordable fun activities at a great location. This massive sports complex offers a day pass for as little as $10. Along with the pass, you have the opportunity to use the indoor Olympic-sized soccer field, all indoor and outdoor courts and fields as well as the advanced Level II Fitness facility. There is also an arcade section, containing hundreds of games, laser tag, bowling and escape rooms. The Bettplex is a perfect spot for you and your friends to take a day and explore!

  • Pleasant View Sledding Hill

If you are looking to engage your inner child for a day, take a visit to the steep slope behind Pleasant View Elementary school which is an underdog to the commonly known Palmer Hills and Crow Creek Park hills. The hill is fairly easy to access, too; just park your car in the main lot and walk through the playground, and you can dive right into your frozen sledding endeavors. But remember: Always be safe while sledding. Wear protective and warm gear, and be aware of your surroundings.

  • VanderVeer Park

VanderVeer Botanical Park in Davenport is open to the general public and is lit up with festive lights and activities during the winter months. Bring a special friend here and take a walk, or have a family night and indulge in the Christmas spirit. Even driving through the park is fun, too. Don’t get me wrong, it’s no Central Park, but VanderVeer is a perfect place for nighttime activity.

  • Frozen Landing Ice Skating Rink

Despite my lack of experience and skill on skates, Frozen Landing is most definitely worth the time. Frozen Landing provides a safe place for people of all ages to enjoy the outdoors and ice skating experience. Skate rental is $2, but if you have your own pair you can bring them and skate all day for $3. This is an opportunity you cannot pass up!

  • NorthPark Mall

NorthPark Mall has various stores and services where you can easily spend a whole day (and probably paycheck). The mall is in a convenient location where you can get groceries, gas, holiday gifts and food. It is the pack-a-punch of shopping; the ultimate place to hang out with friends and family. Visit NorthPark to find out what exactly is in store for your future shopping needs.

As the weather gets cold (maybe) and the Holiday season approaches, resort to these five fun and unique places to get the job done. If you have nothing to do, gather a couple friends and participate in these activities to eliminate your boredom for good!
