Every penny counts

Attention all seniors: Have you applied for scholarships?  Were you aware that PV offers more than 50 scholarships to the senior class each year?  Along with the PV scholarships, there are community scholarships and scholarships given from the college or university of your choice.

With the deadlines coming up, seniors should be taking advantage of the amount of scholarships available to them and try their hardest to get ahold of references that would be beneficial to them. Rachel Tebbe, senior, said, “The PV scholarships are a great way to receive money to help with college tuition, but unfortunately it is not advertised the best. The deadline for the PV scholarships is Feb. 1, 2017, and just earlier this week I was informed that I have about a week to fill the paperwork out.  It would be more helpful if it were advertised to the seniors more.” The scholarships were brought up at the beginning of the year during a class meeting, but since then there has not been too many announcements. In August, many students and parents were told that not too many people actually apply for the scholarships.  Therefore any senior, no matter your grades, how long you’ve been in the district, or what extra-curricular activities you are involved in, has a fair shot.

Many seniors are aware of the scholarships though, and are doing their best to fill out as many as possible. Michael Showers, senior, states, “I think it’s a great way to be awarded a little extra money in preparation for college.” Agreeing with Showers, Marie DeLessio, senior, says, “Scholarships are a great opportunity to get some money for college, and every senior should apply to as many as they can.” Each scholarship available through Pleasant Valley is $1,000, to some that is a bunch of money and other not too much. But either way, $1,000 can make a huge difference in helping you reach your goals after high school and after college.
Seniors, here is your last announcement for applying for scholarships. There are still a couple more days for anyone to apply, and the applications are fairly simple. Just send out a simple text or email to a couple adults asking if they could be used as a reference. Then pick out a couple scholarships you feel fit your personality and characteristics the best. Just remember every penny will count in the end!
