Set to arrive in theaters on July 21, 2023, “Barbie” (2023) aims to give a peek into a society of dolls in a candy-coated world this summer. Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the highly anticipated movie is directed by Greta Gerwig. Already having around 40 Barbie movies in the franchise, the newest installment will be live action instead of animated.
The previous Barbie movies have had a huge impact on younger generations, but especially Generation Z. Growing up, many young girls have been influenced by the films.
Senior Karin Fowler, who grew up watching the Barbie movies, is excited to see the new film. “I’m really excited about the movie. I’ve grown up with all the movies, having the toys, watching the TV show. This movie is so nostalgic for those like me, who remember Barbie when we were young, and now, it’s bringing back that same excitement,” said Fowler.
Barbie is known for demonstrating to young girls that they can be anything they aspire to be. But what the Barbie movies managed to do the best is show girls what stable relationships look like. In every Barbie movie, there is a positive prominent female relationship.
“The one thing that always struck me when watching the Barbie movie was how insignificant the love interests were to the plot, that’s because it was about Barbie or the female lead,” Fowler continued. “She was always demonstrating how to treat others and prioritizing her friends primarily over others.”
The Barbie series has done incredible work to teach girls how to build healthy and meaningful relationships. Many hope this tradition will continue onto the newest addition.
The “Barbie” marketing gives insight on Barbie living multiple different careers. The trailer gives a glimpse of Barbie as a president, author, physicist and a Supreme Court justice. The new storyline is planning to display success in not only relationships, but also in the workforce.
Senior Emily Goodpaster, another avid Barbie fan, is excited to see Barbie in a new environment. “I loved how the previous Barbie movies focused on friendships and I think it’s great how they are now focusing on the importance of working. It’s just a great way to get younger girls to pay attention to big matters like these,” said Goodpaster.
The Barbie movies have continued to teach young girls how to build relationships, be their own person and much more. When the new Barbie movie is released, the young girls in front of the screen will hopefully learn the importance, feel the excitement and continue to sing along with “Aqua Girl.”
