The gap between modern technology and artificial intelligence (AI) has never been bridged until Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno of Hu.ma.ne invented the AI Pin.

Pv senior Luke Lafay shares his opinion on artificial intelligence. “AI can definitely be a little frightening,” said Lafay. “If it is used the right way then it really isn’t that bad though.”

Companies such as OpenAI have been responsible for creating a regulated AI platform known as ChatGPT, which was released in November of 2022. Chat GPT allows people to communicate with the Chatbot through the internet. However, ChatGPT is not a stand-alone platform, and a computer or phone is needed to use it.

Apple and Samsung have been the leaders in recent technology advancements for handheld devices. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and iPhone 15 Pro Max have been the most recent advancements in mobile phone technology. Both companies have made huge strides in the technological field, but neither company has been responsible for advancements in AI.

Joining AI and mobile technology was not been done until Imran Chaudhri, a 20-year former designer at Apple, and Bethany Bongiorno, former director of software engineering at Apple, invented the company “Hu.ma.ne” to create the first mobile connection between AI and modern technology.

As former Apple employees, Chaudhri and Bongiorno have experience in high-quality product management and development, giving them the upper hand over other companies when designing the connection between AI and phones.

The AI pin is unique in that it doesn’t have a physical screen like most mobile phones do. The pin is instead a voice-activated chatbot with a projectable screen that is more applicable in real-time with fast responses and ease of communication.

Senior Josh Hansen shares his thoughts on the new AI pin. “I think it [AI Pin] is a cool invention but it may not be incredibly popular at first,” said Hansen. “People seem way too attached to having a screen in front of them instead of something that doesn’t have much visuals with it.”

Current mobile phones do have the issue of screen time, with the average screen time of teens above 8 hours per day. Phones are extremely addictive, but the AI Pin may prove to reduce screen time by not offering a visible screen with the product.

While this may not be a hit as a replacement for the traditional mobile phone, the abilities and potential advantages of the AI Pin may become a hit in a few years. Texting, calling, and playing music are some of the abilities of the AI Pin that are similar to phones, but removing the screen may appeal to some people trying to solve phone addiction issues.

“I think the AI Pin is a great concept to help people stay off their phones,” continued Hansen. “I think many years down the road it could become a replacement for the iPhone.”

The Hu.ma.ne AI Pin is currently available for order, with shipments starting in March of 2024. With a starting price of $699, the pin has a low reach with the entire market. But as ratings and reviews are released about the product, its popularity may rapidly grow, or shrivel into a failed concept of a mobile AI product.
