Claire Thomsen, junior and very talented musician, is extremely involved in the band program here at Pleasant Valley High School as well as in other ensembles. Music is a very important part of her life, and she is motivated to play and perform by the people who surround her, including her peers and directors.
What instrument(s) do you play and how long have you played?
This is my sixth year of playing flute!
How long have you been in band?
I joined band in the middle of sixth grade.
What is your favorite part about band?
My favorite part of band is all of the friendships I’ve made through making music!
Did you always know you wanted to play flute?
No. I could barely get a sound out of the flute initially, so I honestly don’t know why I chose it.
Will you continue playing flute after high school?
Absolutely.
What is your favorite band memory?
Participating in the Iowa All State Honor Band.
What is your favorite type of music to play?
French music.
How often do you practice?
It fluctuates; normally I play over two hours each day on the weekends but don’t have time to practice as much during the weekdays.
What accomplishment/moment are you most proud of from your musical career?
Winning the Grand Prize for the Quad City Concerto Competition. I will be playing a solo with the Quad City Symphony on April 30th of this year!
What inspires you to continue playing?
Those who have encouraged me along this crazy music experience: band directors private lesson teacher, other friends in band etc.
What advice would you give to any students who are considering taking band?
Here at PV we are one big band family (over 300 of us!). Regardless of how skilled one is at their instrument, or who practices the most, everyone is accepted. It’s a very inclusive program with a large variety of people, creating a fun, welcoming atmosphere!
