Pleasant Valley High School’s chapter of the National Honor Society recently inducted just over 100 new members. While this may seem like a large number, NHS executives need all the help they can get if they want to achieve their goals. This year’s National Honor Society strives to be substantially more active than past chapters.
The National Honor Society is based on four main pillars: character, service, leadership and scholarship. Although inductees must prove that they exemplify these pillars in their application, there is no accountability or guarantee that members will continue to uphold these virtues through their high school careers and lives. Currently, NHS is often viewed as something to add to a college application without much real participation. However, this year’s NHS executives want to change this.
“Being a member of NHS means that you are a direct reflection of these pillars,” said Alika Cho, one of the five senior executives. “Not only do these emulate members as students, but it is a reflection of each person’s individual personality and characteristics.”
In order to ensure the success of this year’s and future chapter, NHS executives plan to hold full-chapter meetings more often than previous years, during which executives will encourage members to make a difference in their school, home and community through the embodiment of the four pillars.
Additionally, NHS would like to work more in conjunction with Spartan Assembly to help better the school community. NHS hopes to continue their previously-established peer tutoring program as a part of the scholarship pillar, encouraging members who are dedicated to scholastic excellence to help their fellow students succeed.
NHS executive Ava Hartsock emphasized the importance of involvement with the organization. “We want to find a group of students who are dedicated to making a positive impact at school and in our community,” stated Hartsock. “NHS should be a platform that students can use to create positive change rather than just a stamp to put on a transcript,” she continued
PV’s chapter of the National Honor Society aims to expand their community outreach through the focus on the four pillars, trusting that members will prove their dedication to making a difference.
