The New Year calls for a fresh start, excitement, and opportunity. Many take the New year as a chance to set goals and intentions for the year ahead. More than 50% of Americans commit to achieving a goal or making a change in the new calendar year.
America’s top resolutions for 2025
1: To save more money (21%)
2: To eat healthier (19%)
3: To exercise more (17%)
4: To lose weight (15%)
Although New Year’s resolutions can be effective for some, the majority fail. Only around 6% of New year’s resolutions are successful while the remaining 94% fail. In fact 88% of individuals who set a resolution fail before the end of January. The second Friday of January is popularly known as “quitters day” because that is the day most people are likely to give up on their resolutions.
How to stick to resolutions
Start resolutions on your time
Resolutions are often set out of tradition or pressure causing them to be set during an unrealistic time period. When goals are set out of pressure rather than need you motivation to complete those goals may lack. Instead find a time in your life when it is realistic to achieve these goals.
Expect challenges
No matter how small or direct your goal may be there is always space for obstacles. Identifying possible obstacles and challenges along the way can help you to prepare for them and better resolve them. This will help you reduce the possibility of setback or failure.
Break your goal down
Creating one overarching goal can seem daunting and unachievable. Instead create a bunch of small benchmarks for your goal in order stay motivated and ensure you keep on track.
Hold yourself accountable
Accountability is the key to success. When creating your goals try to create some network of accountability such as telling a friend or family member, writing it down or joining an accountability group.
