Every week, people flock to their nearest Crumbl store to get a taste of the weekly lineup. Unknowingly, they spend their money on high-calorie foods worth nearly half their daily caloric intake.
Social media has skyrocketed the popularity of Crumbl. Many influencers advertise the cookies on a weekly basis, indulging in the sugar-packed treats. Younger generations succumb to the marketing easily, often wanting to review the cookies themselves.
It is mainly the visual appeal or collaborations that attract customers repeatedly. The colorful decorations or fancy holidays specials entice the young crowd. “I have seen the cute Valentine’s day boxes with the fun flavors and pictures. It usually makes me want to get them,” sophomore Hannah Denning explained.
The cookies may be visually appealing, but the taste of them is oftentimes disappointing. People have reported Crumbl cookies being borderline raw or lacking flavor. “I don’t think they are anything special. I feel like they are either dry or underbaked,” senior Ava Hartsock commented.
Influencers online take advantage of the Crumbl craze to interest their viewers, encouraging their fans to purchase cookies themselves. Without social media, Crumbl would not be nearly as popular as it is today. “It has somewhat of an influence over the habits of people because they go and try all these cookies to post all over your social media for entertainment. They are buying content,” Hartsock added.
Most people overlook the nutritional information of Crumbl. They are aware that the cookies are not healthy, but they do not understand the extent to which they are detrimental to health.
Each cookie ranges from around 700-900 calories typically, with the highest calorie item from a lineup being nearly 1200 calories.
These insane calorie counts are shocking to the average person. A survey of many PV students revealed that most were unaware of the actual calorie content, with some estimating as low as 300 calories. This is compelling due to the fact that the serving size of a Crumbl cookie is one fourth of a cookie, which is typically around 300 calories alone.
Beyond the general calorie information, Crumbl’s health impacts are abundant. People should be mindful of their caloric intake as most people only need around 2000-2500 calories a day. However, Crumbl cookies are a large chunk of one’s daily calories, often resulting in overeating.
Eating such high-sugar and fat foods can lead to negative impacts. Many people have reported feeling sick after indulging in Crumbl. “The cookies are sometimes good, but the aftermath of eating them is not. Sometimes it makes me sick,” Denning commented.
The high prices are simply not worth it. For around five dollars a cookie, there are much better options quality-wise. Students have mentioned a local bakery Cookies and Dreams as a better alternative for high quality cookies.
While it is acceptable to indulge in cookies every so often, there are other alternatives to keep in mind. If the Crumbl location they order from has options for mini cookies, purchasing those can serve as a healthier alternative. Searching for local options or purchasing smaller cookie sizes allows for consumers to eat healthier, affordable options.
