In high school, students are oftentimes reading advanced literature like Shakespeare or novels that contain mature themes. Fantasy novels, however, are a fun escape back to elementary school that are still great reads for high school students!
1- Pendragon: Journal of and Adventure Through Time and Space
While this is a book series, “Pendragon” follows the story of Bobby Pendragon, a high school junior who discovers that he is able to travel through space and time. Bobby is up against a villain whose goal is to cause destruction to different planets in order to build a universe according to his own rules and design. This series follows Bobby’s journey as he travels to different planets in order to prevent their destruction.
2- Land of Stories
This elementary fantasy series follows the story of two twins, Alex and Connor, who recently lost their father to a car accident. In grief, the children immerse themselves in fairy tales from a book gifted by their grandmother. The twins are then sucked into the book and are met with characters from classic fairy tales. This series follows the twins as they navigate the world of fiction and real, and is an excellent twist on classic fairy tales!
3- Wanted
“Wanted” is a dystopian-fiction series following the stories of twins Alex and Aaron. They live in a land called Quill, where children who turn 13 are sorted into categories: wanted, unwanted, necessary. Unwanted children are children who have artistic tendencies and are sent away to death. Alex was deemed unwanted and was sent to death, only to be sent to a land called Artimé, where unwanted children can practice their art in peace. These children, though, must remain in secret to be protected from Quill’s strict military from discovering Artimé. This series follows the stories of unwanted Alex and wanted Aaron as they navigate their twin connection and the intertwining of Artimé and Quill.
4- A Wrinkle in Time
