The Met Gala is a charity event for The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute and is known for bringing in celebrities from around the world. This year, the theme was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”
Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton wore Wales Bonner to the 2025 Gala. Hamilton wore an ivory suit with a cropped jacket, trousers, a white bowtie and a beret by Stephen Jones Millinery. His look is composed of a variety of influences inspired by the Harlem Renaissance, Barkley L. Hendricks paintings and Black spiritual dressing. His look was crafted with over two months of research and was meticulously made to inspire those to think deeply about what they are wearing.
Zendaya
Zendaya has attended the Met Gala several times and this year, she continued to blow attendees away. She wore a custom white Louis Vuitton suit designed by Pharell Williams. Her suit paid homage to the history of the zoot suit, a staple in Black dandyism. Her suit exemplified power dressing in the 1970s and 1980s to tribute trailblazing Black women in the performance space.
Lupita Nyong’o
Lupita Nyong’o took to the Met Gala platform wearing a blue wool jacket, satin blouse and chiffon cape all crafted by Chanel. She attributes her look from her African roots from her inspiration from dressing boldly and defiantly. Her muse was Little Richard, a Black musician who pioneered the Rock ‘n’ Roll movement and inspired numerous artists. Her Chanel look paid homage to the legacy of Black artists.
Cynthia Erivo
Cynthia Erivo attended her 7th Met Gala wearing a Givenchy corset and airy, tulle skirt, a look that took over 2,250 hours to create. Erivo’s look was a combination of the Rococo style of dandyism and modern elements filled with frills, pantaloons and ornate adornments. The embroidery incorporated 43,400 Swarovski crystals and took 1,300 artisanal work to craft. With her look, she wanted to celebrate the creativity and ingenuity of Black men and women through fashion.
