Ever watch a Science Fiction film and wonder if the idea would be feasible in real life? These are six science fiction ideas that could be real, with a brief scientific explanation as to why!
#6 Time Travel
The hallmark of Science Fiction films like “Back to the Future,” “Terminator,” or even “Star Trek,” time travel has always been brushed off as impossible. Looking at them practically, humans would need to access the fourth dimension (time) by traveling at immensely high speeds such that light cannot catch up. We likely won’t be doing that any time soon.
#5 Wormholes
Wormholes, referenced in movies like “Interstellar,” are a tear in spacetime that allows one to travel long distances in a relatively short amount of time. A wormhole is more physically boiled down to when space bends to allow something to poke through it. While humans haven’t physically observed one, the theory devolving from Einstein’s theory of relativity is certainly compelling.
#4 Antimatter Space Travel
In “Star Trek,” the USS Enterprise travels through space using antimatter-fueled engines. This works when antimatter interacts with matter, resulting in an explosion that releases a tremendous amount of energy. However, it’s extraordinarily difficult to work with antimatter due to this property, making its use unlikely in the near future.
#3 Virtual Reality (Neuralink)
Explored in projects like “Ready Player One” or “Sword Art Online,” virtual reality by use of neuralink has often seemed outlandish. However, with our increasing abilities to map out the brain, we may see more realistic and immersive virtual reality experiences be developed, using a similar neuralink system.
#2 Tractor Beams
Featured in almost every “Star Wars” movie is the tractor beam, a device used to pull in entire ships and ensure they can’t escape. In the real world, a tractor beam uses light to manipulate the object it’s trying to pull in. Tractor beams exist today, though not capable of pulling in an entire Corellian Corvette.
#1 Holograms
One of the most iconic calling cards of nearly every space film is the hologram. The hologram tops this list as the most likely science fiction idea to fully come to life. The hologram works by using mirrors to redirect the light of a 2d image and make it appear 3d. While it’s sort of tedious to get a hologram to work in today’s age, that could all change in the future.
