PV girls’ basketball has a reputation for success, but with the loss of the 2025 senior class, the team lost some of its star players. The varsity squad saw the departure of six players, two of whom have continued their athletic careers at Iowa schools. The team is now reaching the new senior class, who were the last players to be a part of the 2023 state championship title.
Iowa girls’ high school basketball has seen the rise of ultra-competitive teams. The Johnston Dragons ran the season on a leash last year. They had a record of 26-0, winning the state title over Dowling Catholic. Pleasant Valley faces the daunting task of facing powerhouse teams like Johnston.
There is worry over the loss of the previous senior class, but with the challenge, there can be an uprising of skill and teamwork. “Our team’s dynamic is definitely different from last because we’re a much younger group. Last year’s seniors contributed a lot of leadership and experience, so now this year we have to redefine our roles and responsibilities. Even though we’re younger, the energy is still high and everyone is eager to step up to new challenges and roles,” said senior Emma Volkstorf.
The 2025-2026 season commenced on Nov. 10, and the first games are allowed to start on Nov. 21. The maximum number of games permitted per season is 21. While the season is starting now, the state championship is held in Des Moines the week of March 2nd.
While the season’s finale is months away, there is still plenty of work to be done within the team. PV Girls’ basketball is known for its initial “hell week” to start off the winter season. This includes grueling practices that weed out players who are not qualified for varsity. “We are sticking to the same core routines and training that has worked for us to stay focused, and emphasizing our fundamentals. Even though our team has changed, staying consistent with our preparation will help us grow into new roles,” said senior Ashley Hansen.
The PV Girls Basketball program is ready to find success in this winter season. “Our main goals are to continue building up our program, compete with high intensity every game and to show improvement throughout the season. We want to develop confidence within ourselves and to stay disciplined,” expressed Volkstorf.
The 2026 seniors have much optimism for a great last year of PV Girls Basketball. Soon, they will pass the torch to the underclassman to continue a prosperous legacy.
