On Oct. 23, Heat guard Terry Rozier, Detroit Pistons coach Chauncey Billups and 32 others were involved with illegal gambling and insider betting. The involved parties used insider information about players on specific teams to make bets on NBA games.
The scandal was centered around prop bets. Prop bets focus on specific statistics, like how many points or rebounds a player can accumulate. In this scandal, insider information was crucial for these bets to hit. For example, specific player injury updates were shared around the illegal community.
Junior Owen Legare was astounded that something like this could even happen in the NBA.“When I heard about the news, I thought back to the first time I watched NBA basketball and started wondering if the NBA now is still the same NBA I used to watch,” said Legare.
For many students across the country, major league sports have been a staple of content to watch for years, and this event has cast a shadow on the quality of the league.
Sports betting has practically become an integral part of sports as many leagues have started to work with sports betting applications such as DraftKings and FanDuel. Because of this, many students across the country have started to become skeptical of professional sports leagues. “I really lost a decent amount of respect at that moment for the NBA and for all major league sports,” shared Legare.
Junior Brayton Birkel expressed his ideas about sports betting becoming more and more prevalent in sports culture. “It’s literally everywhere nowadays. I can’t watch a sports game without hearing about betting or odds on a game or a specific player. I feel like a lot of people don’t even care about who wins anymore; it’s just about how much money people make off of their bets,” said Birkel.
After this incident, many leagues will now enforce strict rules on the spread of insider information and betting, but for many young viewers, the damage has already been done. The quality of major league sports that teenagers and students across the country admired has now been completely tarnished and replaced with doubt. When money begins to influence everything, the quality of the game is lost.
